Bedtime Essential Oils for Kids

In our house, bedtime can be a stressful event almost every night!  As a good parent, you are supposed to leave your child with loving words, comfort, and a sense of peacefulness and calming.... or, in reality- you can start that way and end up frustrated, yelling, and ready for a bottle of wine, I mean glass, no- definitely a bottle!!!! I have come up with a system to make it a little easier on all of us parents by incorporating essential oils into our bedtime routine! Here's how:

During bath time, I like to diffuse Cedarwood, Vetiver, and Citrus Fresh. My son is 3 and super hyper- a lot of the calming scents like Peace & Calming and Lavender don't work on him. We all LOVE Cedarwood and I add the Citrus Fresh and Vetiver for him because I'm finding that the citrus oils actually work to calm him and not stimulate, like it might do to others. Citrus oils are great because they're uplifting, happy, and can be energizing but they are also calming for our nervous system!

In the bath water, I like to mix 1/2c. epsom salt with 3 drops Lavender and 2 drops Stress Away to help them unwind.

After bath time, I apply the calm kids roller (see recipe below) to the bottom of their feet and on super crazy nights, I spray their pillows with the Calm Room spray (see recipe below).

This combination of efforts has saved my sanity and helped everyone wind down at the end of the night! I also ALWAYS apply Stress Away to my wrists and behind my ears before any of these shenanigans start taking place (Stress Away is like a mini vacation in a bottle)….

ps. Our bodies, kids, personalities are all obviously different, just because this works for us- it might not work for you! You're not out of luck though as essential oils have many uses and benefits, so I know for sure that there's something that will work for you too!

Calm Rooms Spray:
10 drops Cedarwood
10 drops Lavender
10 drops Peace & Calming
10 drop Orange (can substitute Stress Away)
1/4t. Sea Salt
Distilled Water
Add Sea Salt to Glass Bottle (I buy mine HERE
then Add Essential Oils (I buy my oils HERE)
Fill remainder of bottle with Distilled Water
Spray onto bedding/pillow before nap time to help "wind down"

Calm Kids Roller:
5 drops Cedarwood
5 drops Lavender
5 drops Peace & Calming
3 drops Vetiver
Sweet Almond Oil

Fill Glass Bottle (I buy mine HERE
with Essential Oils (I buy my oils HERE)
Top off with Sweet Almond Oil (I buy my Carrier Oils HERE
I add a roller fitament to my bottles for easy application (I buy them HERE)
Apply behind the ears,  On extra crazy days, I roll this on their feet and the backs of their neck to help CALM DOWN!!!!

Calm Kids made my kid CRAZIER Roller:

I have a 3 year old son who is Very hyper! When I started using Essential Oils with him, I found the opposite was happening... Instead of calming him down-they were making him CRAZIER! Not exactly the result I was hoping for!  I did a bunch of research and came up with an alternative blend for him and I cannot say enough about how it's helping calm him down and FOCUS! We apply this blend before nap time and bedtime to help relax daily.  I also diffuse different blends throughout the day to help him with being calm and focused.  This is what has worked for us, however, each child is unique and this specific blend may not help you.

10 drops Cedarwood
8 drops Citrus Fresh
5 drops Valor
5 drops Lavender
4 drops Vetiver
Sweet Almond Oil

Fill Glass Bottle (I buy mine HERE
with Essential Oils (I buy my oils HERE)
Top off with Sweet Almond Oil (I buy my Carrier Oils HERE
I add a roller fitament to my bottles for easy application (I buy them HERE)
Apply behind the ears,  On extra crazy days, I roll this on their feet and the backs of their neck to help CALM DOWN!!!!

Crazy Kids?!?! These will help do the trick…

1. Lavender:  To get my kids to bed on time, I like to either diffuse it or rub on their feet every night before bed.   I also make a mist that I spray on their bedsheets to help them wind down.
2. Peace & Calming:  For my babies, I like to add a drop of Peace & Calming essential oil to the diffuser or the bottoms of their feet. I also really like the combination of Lavender, Peace & Calming and Cedarwood for my children.
3. Cedarwood:  This is one of my favorite for the kids!  I like to use this one individually on them the most and I just place a drop on the back of their heads and it really seems to help them doze off.  The other plus is after a long day, diffuse it and it will also help you achieve a deeper sleep!!!

4. Stress Away:  This one’s for you us moms!  Rub Stress Away on your wrists (I can't stop huffing myself when its on), you can put it on a diffuser necklace, or use it with some epsom salt and take a bath in it!  Stress Away has an amazing smelling blend that can help you still love your kids, which is easier said than done!!!

5. Frankincense:  Frankincense is amazing for emotional support in both us parents, and our kids!  Just add a drop to the back of their neck (or your own) and feel the cares float away!

Diluting Essential Oils with Children

Guide for Diluting Oils with Children:

Here is some approximate guides for dilution:

  • 6 months- 2 years: Dilute 4x the label recommendation
  • 2-5 years: Dilute 3x the label recommendation
  • 5-10 years: Dilute 2x the label recommendation

Here is a great link to help you learn more about how to safely use Young Living Essential Oils in your home: https://www.youngliving.com/en_US/discover/essential-oil-safety

*Keep “Hot” Oils Away from Children:
Oils such as oregano, cinnamon, thyme, eucalyptus, mountain savory, lemon, and orange… or blends like Thieves, PanAway, Releive It, and Exodus II should be stored away from children (although, really, I keep all my oils away from my children!). These are also the types of oils that should always be diluted for both children and adults. If a child swallows an essential oil:
  • Seek immediately emergency medical attention, if necessary
  • Give the child milk, cream, yogurt, or another safe, oil-soluble liquid to drink

Essential Oils for Focus & Memory in Kids

It seems like every kid I meet these days is being told that they're hyperactive, and need to be put on medication.  I do understand that there are people who need medication and greatly benefit from it, however, I'm glad that I grew up in a time where we were kicked outside when being hyperactive and not given a pill.  I want to help my family and friends with their concentration and focus so, I created this blend to help:

Concentration Blend:  5ml
5 drops Vetiver
5 drops Valor
5 drops Lavender
5 drops Lemon
5 drops Cedarwood
Sweet Almond Oil

Fill Glass Bottle (I buy mine HERE
with Essential Oils (I buy my oils HERE)
Top off with Sweet Almond Oil (I buy my Carrier Oils HERE
I add a roller filament to my bottles for easy application (I buy them HERE)

*This blend is best applied behind the ears in the morning, before school and
also in the evenings before working on homework.

Essential Oils for Digestive Support in Kids

We all know how important the Digestive System for maintaining health and wellness and it's jut as important in our babies.  There are safe, natural ways to care for our littles and supporting their digestion couldn't be easier! Everyone seems to have their own opinions on what is ok to use with babies and what isn't.  It's important to do your research, and listen to your body when it comes to making these decisions.  If you love the way something makes you feel, try a more diluted version of it with your child and see if you can help support them in the same ways as yourself!  We all are great parents and it's truly up to us to be our own health advocates and do what is best for our families.

I have don plenty of research, and the Peppermint for children under 6 isn't a definite yes or no. Undiluted peppermint is a no for sure, but with proper dilutions it can work well in children. Some children do have respiratory symptoms when exposed to peppermint so it should always be administered with caution and heavily diluted. Some books say that true unadulterated peppermint is safe even in babies. It's just about educating yourself and doing what is right for your family.

*Under 6 years of age:  Dilute 1 drop DiGize and/or Peppermint with 1 drop Carrier oil directly on the stomach
*Over 6 years old:  Dilute above oils in water and consume; 1 drop of each in a 12oz glass of water

Digestive Blend:

3 drops DiGize
5 drops Ginger
10 drops Lavender
Sweet Almond

Fill Glass Bottle (I buy mine HERE
with Essential Oils (I buy my oils HERE)
Top off with Sweet Almond Oil (I buy my Carrier Oils HERE
I add a roller fitament to my bottles for easy application (I buy them HERE)
Apply to chest and massage to help baby to feel comforted and to stop crying.

Accidents happen but this helped us:

Copaiba, Cypress, and Frankincense are quite helpful. Particularly Cypress if rubbed on the lower belly and then followed by Copaiba. Also, Frankinsence can be more helpful if taken internally (in older children/teenagers). There is also an interesting testimonial where Copaiba and Endoflex were used and got great results.

In a 15ml Glass Bottle:

30 drops Cypress
15 drops EndoFlex
10 drops Frankincense
Sweet Almond Oil

Fill Glass Bottle (I buy mine HERE
with Essential Oils (I buy my oils HERE)
Top off with Sweet Almond Oil (I buy my Carrier Oils HERE
I add a roller fitament to my bottles for easy application (I buy them HERE)
Apply to groin area.

Discover a more NATURAL way to care for YOUR BABY!

Respiratory Support:  For relief during daytime hours, diffuse 1 drop Lavender or Melaleuca.

Respriatory Support:  Mix 1 drop Lavender with 1T. carrier oil and rub small amount on chest and back.

Crying:  Place a drop of Lavender or Roman Chamomile on a tissue (or parents hand) and let baby smell the oil.  Be careful to keep babies hands away from oils so they don't end up with them in their eyes- we all know how fast those little hands are :)

Crying/Comfort:  (5ml)

5 drops Valor
5 drops Peace & Calming
10 drops Lavender
Sweet Almond Oil
Fill Glass Bottle (I buy mine HERE

Cooling Down:  Mix 1 drop Lavender with 1T. carrier oil.  Apply a small amount on the bottoms of the feet, the back of the neck, and behind the ears.  Cover the feet with socks so that baby won't get the oils in her mouth.

Teething:  Mix 1 drop Roman Chamomile or Lavender with 1T. carrier oil.  Use a small amount to massage around the outside of the face and jaw line.

ESSENTIAL OILS MOST COMMONLY RECOMMENDED FOR BABIES:
grapefruit, lavender, lemon, mandarin, melaleuca, orange, petitgrain, roman chamomile, tangerine, and neroli.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS:

Because a baby's skin is so delicate, it is a good idea to dilute all essential oils before applying them onto the skin.  A good rule of thumb is to dilute 1 drop of essential oil with 1T. of a carrier oil such as; jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, avocado oil, sunflower oil, extra-virgin olive oil, etc.  Avoid diffusing very strong oils such as; cinnamon, peppermint, or oregano in the baby's room.  It is also a good idea to cover baby's feet with socks after applying essential oils and to avoid applying oils on the baby's hands, so that the oils don't end up in baby's mouth!

Essential Oils for Crazy Kids

Like I said, I am a mother. I have used YL Oils for awhile now and am always learning and expanding my knowledge base! When it comes to our children, we are the ones who Love, Teach, and Protect them. I wanted to make sure the oils I was using were safe for them because obviously, I wouldn't want to do anything to harm them! I know the oils I use are safe because they are Young Living…

Young Living makes it really easy on us parents and actually provides a collection of oils designed for children and the best part is the come already diluted!!! I LOVE these oils and so do my kids :) They actually come and ask me for their oils when they need them and as a mom - I'm so relived to know that I'm teaching my kids a healthier way of life!

If you don't want the entire collection- guess what?  Young Living has released these as individual oils now so you can pick which ones that you want to try!  I made an "Owie" spray for my kids and simply put 20 drops of the Owie blend in a 1oz. spray bottle and topped it off with Witch Hazel so now I can just spray and play!

In regards to children… This is a great post written by Tracey Black that talks about which oils are safe to use in children and gives some common recipes to support illnesses:

This article discusses which oils to avoid on small children and when you can start using them as your child grows.

Maintaining Health with Ningxia Red

NingXia Red® is a whole-body nutrient infusion packed with ingredients specifically chosen for their wellness-supporting benefits. In addition to the legendary Ningxia wolfberries, blueberry, aronia, cherry, pomegranate, and plum juices introduce additional carotenoids and phytonutrients. A blend of Orange, Yuzu, Lemon, and Tangerine essential oils also adds premium, natural flavoring.
1 oz in the morning with 1 oz Apple Cider Vinegar and 1 oz mid afternoon with a drop of essential oil (I prefer 1 drop Frankincense and 2 drops of Orange) usually does the trick!

Did you know drinking 1 oz of Ningxia red is the equivalent of :
3 cups of blueberries
2 cups of beet juice
2 pounds of raw beets
1 pint of orange juice
8 oranges
2 quarts of carrot juice
4 pounds of carrots and
2 cups of raspberries

With kids being picky eaters at least they are getting some good antioxidants in their bodies first thing in the morning.  If they pick up a bug, they can get an extra serving in the afternoon!

Three Essential Oil Uses {with my Personal OBSESSION!}

So, here you are

You've decided to take the time to learn a little more about the wonderful, little vials filled with natural goodness! I can't even begin to explain all of the benefits of using Oils and how addictive it becomes so I took some pictures… This is how much my habit grew over a 2 WEEK period! I love playing "mad scientist" and making blends for my family and friends to make our lives happier and much more balanced! I'm so glad you want to know more about essential oils! I am kind of oily obsessed right now!!

Here's an update of my collection after 4  months:

Essential Oils have changed my families life and I'm so excited that we were able to make this change while my kids are still young enough to learn about this lifestyle and how to take charge of their own health!

*Disclaimers:
  •  I only use high grade oils for my DIY products. Some essential oils will not be suitable for skin application, applications on children/pets or for therapeutic use. Please read below for more information.

For more information or to Get Started, go HERE

There are 3 ways you can use your essential oils:

Aromatically:

Aromatic uses of essential oils can heighten the senses and have positive effects for the mind and body.
  1. Inhale the oil directly from the bottle: simply smell it! You can rub a drop or two on your hands and cup your nose or just inhale directly from the bottle.
  2. Diffuse the oils with a diffuser which disperses the oils in a micro-fine vapor throughout the air. A diffuser does not heat the oils which can damage their therapeutic properties.
  3. Breathe in steamy vapors deeply by carefully pouring hot water into a glass bowl, adding in a couple drops of essential oils, and covering the bowl in a tent like fashion with a cloth or towel.

Topical Application:

Young Living essential oils are safe to use topically on our skin or even our pet’s fur. Because of their molecular structure, Essential Oils are rapidly absorbed by the skin. It takes seconds to get them into our blood stream.

Vitaflex points on hands, feet, spine and ears that relate to organ systems and activate their reflex.  It’s the same electrical pathways in the body that accupressure and accupuncture work with.
Sensitive people may taste it in their mouth in a few moments.  Our pores on soles of our feet are very big and have great absorption so be mindful what you’re walking barefoot on and what cleaners you use or yard chemicals that you, your kids or your pets may walk on or if you stand in a bathtub when you clean it.   The pores on our feet absorb alot!

Internal Consumption:

Many Young Living essential oils are safe to ingest as a dietary supplement or food flavoring. It’s always important to follow the recommended dosage on individual product labels before taking oils internally.
You can put essential oils in empty veggie capsules, in your water, put a drop in raw honey, or on bread.  Citrus oils eat petrochemicals so use glass or stainless steel oinly to drink oils from.

But wait! Safety is Important!

There are 2 places we NEVER put essential oils
  1. In the eyes
  2. Deep in ear canal
If either of these accidently happens, it shouldn’t damage your eye but it will sting and you can put in a couple drops of a carrier oil and it takes the sting out in seconds!

Do NOT use water!  Oil and water don’t mix and sting will be worse. If you don’t have access to a carrier oil (in the car, at a restaurant, etc) find something fatty like milk or butter.

Skin Test:

It’s a good idea to skin test an essential oil before using it. Every body is different and just because one oil did incredible things for one person doesn’t automatically mean it will be a perfect fit for you, and in some rare instances an oil may irritate your skin:
  • Start with just one oil or blend at a time.
  • Apply the oil (neat or diluted, as indicated on your bottle) to a small area first.
  • When trying oils that are new to you, allow enough time (3 – 5) minutes for the body to respond before applying a second oil.
  • Placing oils on the bottom of your feet is most often a safe place to use essential oils topically if you experience irritation elsewhere.

And enjoy!

Okay, now that we got the technical safety stuff out of the way, don’t stress too much about using the “wrong” oil. Reactions or burning sensations to the oils are most often an indication of fast blood flow to that area. Oils don’t burn the skin the way a chemical can. If an oil doesn’t work for you, there are always other oils to try until you find what’s the best fit for your body. Essential oils metabolize in the body quickly. They do their goodness and then move on. You want to be safe, sure, but unless you’re doing something ridiculous you should be just fine.

Great information right?

Carrier Oils

Pure essential oils are extremely concentrated, and some are too strong to be used directly on the body.  It is recommended that you dilute your oils with a natural medium or carrier. Carrier oils or base oils are the perfect solution, with the exception of Grapeseed oil.  These oils are obtained by cold pressing the vegetables, nuts or seeds from a variety of plants.  Carrier oils will provide better coverage and absorption of the essential oils over a larger area of your body. Carrier Oils also have many nourishing properties and can be very beneficial for use with skin care or for massage.

Some of the more common base oils used for aromatherapy are Jojoba, Sweet Almond, Grapeseed, Sesame, Hazelnut and Evening Primrose.  Each oil has its own set of therapeutic properties; most are rich in minerals, vitamins and proteins.  Carrier oils, and essential oils, may be blended to incorporate a varying range of therapeutic benefits.

I get some of my carrier oils from Wyndmere Aromatherapy and here is a description of their oils:

Evening Primrose:  Seeds from the flower of this lovely plant produce an oil very high in GLA (gamma linoleic acid). This is a fatty acid which helps repair mature or damaged skin. It's one of the more expensive carrier oils so it is oftentimes used in combination with other base oils.  A small amount can also be used instead of vitamin E to retard rancidity of other carrier oils.

Grapeseed:  Produced from grape seeds by hot extraction, this oil is high in linoleic acids and has a small amount of vitamin E.  It's a gentle emollient that is absorbed by the skin easily without feeling greasy which makes it desirable for massages.

Hazelnut:  Cold pressed from the nut of the hazel tree, this oil is light and easily absorbed. It is rich in vitamins, minerals and protein and is good for all skin types.  It's thought to have astringent properties so is believed to be particularly good for oily skin.

Jojoba:  Obtained from the seeds of a desert shrub, this oil is actually a liquid wax.  It's one of the more commonly used for dilution of essential oils since it does not go rancid.  It is known as a balancing oil and therefore is good for all skin types.

Sesame:  Seeds inside the pod of this ancient flowering herb give us this wonderful oil.  It's prescribed often for daily massage in Ayurvedic medicine and is considered to have antioxidant properties.

Sweet Almond:  This oil is obtained by cold pressing the kernels of the sweet almond.  It's rich in vitamins A, B1, B2 and B6 as well as a small amount of vitamin E.  It also contains mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids which make it useful for all skin types.  It's a lighter weight oil that is often used in massage because of its lubricating qualities.

*SUGGESTIONS:

An unrefined natural carrier oil may become rancid or spoiled over time (except for Jojoba which is a wax) so it is best to store them away from heat and in a dark container. A good way to prolong the shelf life of a carrier oil is to add a small amount of vitamin E or wheat germ oil (no more than 2 %).  Smelling the oil is perhaps the best indicator of freshness.  If used in blending, it is advisable to keep the essential oil and the carrier oil separate until ready to use.
Never use a mineral oil such as any of the commercial baby oils or salves for aromatherapy purposes.  They are synthetics made from petroleum sources and tend to clog the pores because of their larger molecular structure.

Hydrosols/Floral Waters:

Restore natural balance to your skin

True floral waters, also known as hydrosols, are natural products and not merely the addition of essential oils to water.  They are the fragrant waters collected during the process of distilling essential oils.  The release of the essential oils contained within the plant is facilitated by subjecting the plant materials to boiling water or steam.  The vapors containing essential oils are separated as the steam cools in the condensing tank. The essential oils are then skimmed off leaving the water, now referred to as the hydrosol or floral water.  Floral waters contain water soluble compounds not found in the essential oil as well as some residual oil.
They are soothing, moisturizing and anti-inflammatory.

Floral waters can be used as skin toners. They may be used full strength.  Mist your face and body generously or add to masks and lotions. They can also be used in your bath or as inhalations. Because they are mild, floral waters are recommended for children, seniors or those with highly sensitive skin.

Lavenderbalancing for all skin types
Nerolifor dry or sensitive skin types
Peppermint- Cooling, recommended for all skin types
Rosemildly astringent, balancing for all skin types

Astringent:

You can also use an astringent product, I prefer Witch Hazel for my skin.  I also like to add some Purification and Lemon oils to mine!  It smells so clean and I love the way my skin feels.

Witch hazel is normally gentle on skin and also can also help moisturize your skin, so it's less likely to dry compared to other astringents.

Epsom Salt:

One of the easiest things to make is bath salts. Why? Because really, there are only two ingredients: Salt and Essential Oil.  You can add things like dried herbs, other salts, or even a little bit of a carrier oil to make it moisturizing.

I mix everything together in a container and then it's ready to go! You can use between 1/4 cup to 1 cup of bath salts per bath but I tend to use about 1/2 cup.

*If you let the mixture sit for a couple of days, it may discolor because of the salt dissolving. Give it a stir to incorporate all the ingredients.

You can definitely make a big jar of this if you like, it will stay good for quite some time.

Here are a couple of my personal recipes:  These are all large amounts made to last for a longer period of time. You can cut this down if you would like to try a smaller batch!

ORGANIC JOJOBA
This is an excellent moisturizer for all skin types.  It combines with the sebum of your skin and gently unclogs the pores.  It contains myristic acid which has anti-inflammatory properties, protein and a waxy substance that mimics collagen.  Jojoba is actually a liquid wax which never goes rancid giving it an indefinite shelf life.

PARABEN-FREE
Chemical compounds known as parabens are commonly used as preservatives in the body care industry. Recently, however, these compounds have generated concern among consumers and manufacturers regarding the estrogen-like action parabens have on the body.  An accumulation or toxicity of these chemicals could increase the potential for cancer.

ORGANIC VIRGIN COCONUT OIL
This unrefined organic oil retains all of its natural components that are beneficial to your skin.  Coconut oil not only brings quick moisturizing relief to dry skin but also has long-lasting benefits.  It provides protective antioxidants and helps remove dead cells on the skin surface, making the skin smoother and leaving it with a healthy glow and more youthful appearance.  Creams using coconut oil may feel oily when applied but are quickly absorbed without leaving a layer of greasy film.  Repeated use of coconut oil will gradually soften and improve the skin's ability to act as a protective barrier by restoring its pH balance.  Coconut oil is considered very stable and has a long shelf life.

OIL PULLING

If you haven’t heard of this before, it definitely sounds strange. Basically, you swish a spoonful of coconut oil in your mouth for 10-20 minutes (or as long as you can stand it without gagging on the saliva and oil! ha!), similar to how you’d use mouthwash but without gargling (I also like to add a drop of essential oils for added benefit). Then you spit it into the trash and rinse your mouth with warm water. The belief is that the coconut oil pulls out toxins and bacteria from the mouth and the body. Many people swear by its effectiveness in promoting health and healing, for many various issues.
